Tyler shields and His girlfriend Francesca Eastwood ( Clint’s daughter). Are in trouble with plenty of folks on the Internet for burning and maiming a Birkin Bag.
The bag which cost upwards of $10,000 was hit with a chainsaw and then burned up while Shields took photos. We’ve featured his work before with his Occupy series and this just seems in poor Taste.

While I think the Birkin in general is a ridiculous thing to spend that much money on, I cannot condone spending the money and then destroying the bag for art. Give that $10k to a charity or to a school or to poor people

Sometimes the super rich disgust me

Bionda Castana is a British shoe brand that is sure to become popular in the states very, very soon.  The wide selection of styles from velvet, high-heel slippers to mesh booties are sure to please everyone.  Look for a larger range of styles to be available at Saks Fifth Avenue this August.

Sketches of the Rodarte costumes for the upcoming Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Don Giovanni have been released and one can only imagine what these beauties look like in person. The designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, worked with Swarovski and used 130,000 crystals to create six costumes including headdresses, gowns, and wigs for the three leading ladies of the opera. If you are lucky enough to be in LA, definitely check out this production. With sets by Frank Gehry, it is one you won’t want to miss.

Feathers and sequins and fringe, OH MY!  The trailer for the The Great Gatsby movie directed by Baz Lurhman and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan has been released giving us just a hint of the fashion, glamor, and glitz that is to come in December.  Yes, we have to wait until Christmas to get the full trip back to the 20’s but this should be enough to keep you excited for the next seven months.

Amazing. One of my favorite books I cannot wait

Betsey as shot by EJ Camp

Image by EJ Camp, found here.

Betsey Johnson had their final sample sale at the Millennium Hotel this weekend. As usual, we were there on Friday morning, my roommate and I, waiting patiently in a long line of women and a couple of reluctant boyfriends. When Ms. Daisy, who opens every sale and presides over the chaos, finally opened the doors, she announced, haltingly, “This is it, ladies! This is the last one!”

Yesterday, Monday morning, I went back to see the final day of the final sale. This time, it hit me. Staring at the racks of brightly colored dresses, running my hands along the table of sweaters and scarves, it hit me: this was it. This really was the last one.

Why should the bankruptcy of a designer line hit me this way? Why did I feel a little heartsick as they rang up my last Betsey Johnson sundress? Why did the racks of samples for Fall 2012, garments that will never be produced, get to me quite the way they did?

Maybe it’s because Betsey Johnson was my first designer brand. During a time when I was recovering from the failure of a long-term relationship, I was in a state of transition, figuring out who I was when I was alone, who I wanted to be, and I was scared. Afraid to be confident, afraid to be beautiful, afraid to be quirky, and afraid to love every flawed part of myself. Stepping into that first Betsey pop-up shop in the garment district, I felt awed. Those dresses all belonged to the woman I wanted to be. Trying things on, they all fit me, just exactly the way I wanted them to. In Betsey I felt beautiful. I felt unique. I felt like a bombshell.

Betsey Johnson made me feel beautiful without being uncomfortable, glamorous without being pretentious, put-together without losing my sense of fun. And unlike so many other designers who make clothing for stick-thin, narrow-hipped runway models, she made me feel like I had found clothing tailor-made for my curves, my hips and big breasts and all. In Betsey, I have nothing to hide, and I walk a little taller.

Betsey’s been with me to opening nights. She’s been with me to cast parties. She’s been with me to weddings and anniversary parties, brunches and first dates, shopping and sightseeing. And when I get married myself, it’ll be in the dress Lulu wore in the last Spring show. If I could sum up my last year, I’d say it was the year of wearing Betsey.

And maybe that’s why, waiting for the elevator to take me down from the sixth floor of the Millennium Hotel, my throat was a little tight, my heart just a little sore.

I know there will be other designers, other sales. And I know Betsey may design again, for another line, another brand. But Betsey Johnson was my favorite; Betsey Johnson was my first.

And you never forget your first.
